HERE Technologies And AWS Offer Seamless Location Services To Developers

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and HERE Technologies are offering developers seamless access to an array of location services through the recently launched AWS Serverless Application Repository. The companies said this will increase the speed and ease in which developers can access and integrate core location services into their applications.

Developers on the AWS Serverless Application Repository are now able to easily utilize a suite of HERE location services, including: map images and tiles; geocoding; positioning; routing; road toll costs; road traffic conditions; public transit information; and weather conditions.

Developers simply need credentials from developer.here.com to then access the location services on the AWS Serverless Application Repository.

“Because HERE location services are available in the AWS Serverless Application Repository, developers can rapidly deploy AWS Lambda into their own AWS account that serve as proxies to HERE location services, and thus allows for a microservices approach to calling the HERE locations services. This approach also provides developers with benefits from Amazon API Gateway and AWS Lambda capabilities such as cache, throttling, and authentication”, according to the company.

“Thanks to the contributions of APN Partners like HERE, AWS is able to offer a comprehensive collection of customer-focused serverless applications through the AWS Serverless Application Repository,” said Tim Wagner, General Manager of AWS Lambda, Amazon Web Services. Inc. “We’re proud to offer an easy way for developers and companies to get started with HERE’s locations services.”

The AWS Serverless Application Repository is currently available in Preview.

Collaboration Helps Power Connected Business Models with Location-Aware IoT Solutions.

EPAM Systems Inc., a leading global provider of digital platform engineering and software development services, and HERE Technologies, the Open Location Platform company, announced a new collaboration focused on creating and delivering innovative asset tracking solutions to the transportation, logistics, distribution and fleet management industries.

The combination of HERE location technology for high-accuracy end-to-end tracking of goods, services and content and EPAM’s comprehensive IoT capabilities, including development of a full range of connected devices to infrastructure and integration capabilities, will help customers create broad new enterprise business models, as well as drive new efficiencies across their organizations.

“As we continue to evolve our IoT services practice to include a broad range of vertical and horizontal use cases, partnerships with industry leaders like HERE allow us to deliver powerful, context-aware and personalized solutions to enterprises and users alike,” said Eli Feldman, CTO, Advanced Technology, EPAM.

“HERE Tracking capabilities are logically extensible beyond transportation use cases and can cover a range of in-demand capabilities in our key verticals, including retail, media and entertainment and life sciences, in the future.”

EPAM intends to build a comprehensive digital platform for transportation, asset and fleet management companies utilizing HERE Tracking as an integrated value-added capability. HERE Tracking is a powerful cloud Platform as a Service (PaaS) for low-energy, high-accuracy and real-time tracking of goods and devices both indoors and outdoors.

HERE Tracking, built on the HERE Open Location Platform, will give EPAM and HERE the ability to offer customers a comprehensive set of location and tracking services, including:

  • industry-grade maps for indoor venues and outdoor environments with geo-coding capabilities;
  • highly accurate, energy-efficient indoor-outdoor positioning technology with offline capabilities that enables conventional tracking devices to work longer due to superior battery management;
  • tracking and geo-fencing APIs; and
  • analytics API and visualization tools.

“Commerce today is conducted at global scale, where supply chains and marketplaces transcend geography. At the same time, businesses can no longer afford operational inefficiencies as consumers expect goods and services to be delivered with unprecedented speed and reliability,” said, Leon van de Pas, SVP Internet of Things at HERE Technologies. “The combination of HERE Tracking and EPAM’s ability to quickly engineer and deliver IoT software is a powerful solution for any business to fundamentally increase its operational efficiency.”

Bosch to acquire stake in HERE to boost its data-based services

Bosch to acquire stake in HERE to boost its data-based services

Bosch to acquire stake in HERE to boost its data-based services

Highlights: Bosch to acquire 5 percent indirect ownership stake in HERE Technologies. Bosch CEO Denner: “We see possible synergies with data-based services for Industry 4.0, smart homes, and smart cities”. Focal point of collaboration between Bosch and HERE is global open platforms for all customers, automotive and non-automotive.

Bosch is acquiring a 5 percent indirect ownership stake in HERE Technologies, a global provider of digital mapping and location services.

The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

The acquisition gives a boost to Bosch’s services business. It also helps HERE take a further step toward its goal of becoming a global provider of data-based real-time location services to customers both inside and outside the automotive industry.

“Bosch is more than cars,” said Dr. Volkmar Denner, chairman of the board of management of Robert Bosch GmbH.

“Industry 4.0, smart homes, and smart cities are rapidly growing areas of business for us, in which establishing and expanding data-based services will result in synergies with HERE.”

Edzard Overbeek, the CEO of HERE Technologies, added:
“We are delighted to have brought on board a strong partner like Bosch, with its broad-based expertise in both the automotive and Internet of Things sectors. Bosch’s strong presence across the Americas, Asia and Europe also offers HERE attractive opportunities to further grow our business globally.”

Bosch is acquiring its ownership stake from HERE’s indirect shareholders AUDI AG, BMW Group, and Daimler AG. The acquisition is still subject to approval by the antitrust authorities. It is expected to be concluded by the end of the first quarter of 2018.

Industry 4.0: automating and streamlining flows of goods

Data-based services are already contributing more and more to growth at Bosch. The company’s IT expertise and infrastructure is correspondingly strong: worldwide, Bosch employs more than 20,000 software engineers across 120 locations and operates its own IoT cloud. In addition, Bosch offers its IoT Suite, a dedicated software platform for IoT solutions. The planned collaboration between Bosch and HERE could happen in the Industry 4.0 domain, for example. One potential area of application is intralogistics. For example, high-definition indoor navigation maps could be used to automate and streamline flows of goods all the way to the production line. Likewise, they could be used to direct maintenance personnel unfamiliar with a facility directly to the equipment in need of repair. The companies are exploring a range of opportunities where Bosch’s IoT Suite and HERE location services such as HERE Tracking could be utilized in innovative ways.

Automated driving: creating and updating high-definition maps

Open platforms for all customers will be the focal point of the collaboration between Bosch and HERE, both in non-automotive as well as automotive domains, and particularly where increasingly connected and automated mobility is concerned. High-definition maps are a requirement for self-driving cars. These must be kept up-to-date with data from the vehicle’s sensors and supplemented with real-time information on traffic conditions, congestion, construction sites, and accidents. The road signature provided by Bosch gives an idea of how this might be done. It uses information from the Bosch radar and video sensors in the vehicle to enrich and update high-definition maps. Consequently, Bosch and HERE are exploring opportunities to utilize road signature in the maintenance of HERE HD Live Map, HERE’s map for automated vehicles.

A Week in IoT: Never mind Predictions, there’s enough to focus on in the Here and Now

At this time of year every editor is drowning in predictions for the year ahead. To be honest, I prefer more solid information, says Jeremy Cowan. There is so much enterprise restructuring going on that we’re frantically busy with hard facts in the inter-related worlds of security, billing, car charging, and data management.

Thales CEO goes off ‘merger’ script announcing Gemalto acquisition

The week got off to a bang with Thales (Euronext Paris: HO) and Gemalto (Euronext Amsterdam and Paris: GTO) agreeing to merge.

Patrice Caine, Thales’s chairman and CEO, said: “The acquisition of Gemalto marks a key milestone in the implementation of Thales’s strategy. Together with Gemalto’s management, we have big ambitions based on a shared vision of the digital transformation of our industries and customers. We have a tremendous respect for Gemalto’s technological achievements, and … I welcome warmly Gemalto’s 15,000 employees to our Group.  By combining our talents, Thales and Gemalto are creating a global leader in digital security.”

Over the past three years, Thales has significantly increased its focus on digital technologies, investing over €1 billion in connectivity, cybersecurity, data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI), in particular with the acquisition of Sysgo, Vormetric and Guavus. The integration of Gemalto is expected to accelerate this strategy, reinforcing Thales’s digital offering, across its five vertical markets (aeronautics, space, ground transportation, defence and security). Altogether, this new business unit will represent approximately 20% of Group revenues and rank among the top three players worldwide, with €3.5 billion revenues in the fast growing digital security market.

Combined with Gemalto’s digital security portfolio, Thales will be able to offer an end-to-end solution, to secure the full critical digital decision chains, from data creation in sensors to real-time decision-making. Clients are facing data security challenges in all sectors, including telcos, governments, banks, utilities, and other industries.

Thales will combine its digital businesses into Gemalto, which will continue to operate under its own brand as one of the seven Thales global business units. Philippe Vallée, Gemalto’s erstwhile CEO, will lead the combined digital security business.

The deal is a recommended all-cash offer for all issued and outstanding ordinary shares of Gemalto, for a price of €51.00 per share cum dividend.

Smartly’s mobile app helped by Capgemini to bill
Norwegians accurately for electric car charging

It’s not just enterprises that are repositioning themselves, entire countries are refocusing their business models. Norway is well-known as a global leader in renewable energy, having launched an initiative in 2016 to power all cars with renewable energy by 2025.

As part of this process, the country now wants to provide car owners with easy access to charging stations through housing co-operatives. In a new project, Smartly will encourage Norwegians to use of community chargers and move towards electric car usage by 2025.

With help from Capgemini, and its subsidiary Sogeti, Microsoft is now to build Smartly a cloud connected multi-platform mobile app. Using its expertise in cloud-native technology and its commitment to create measurable digital customer experiences, Smartly said it has moved from a proof-of-concept to a working app in […]
