Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi launch Alliance Ventures, announce first investment

New venture capital fund Alliance Ventures will aim to support and develop technologies for vehicle electrification, autonomous driving, connectivity and artificial intelligence.

Automotive alliance Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi has this week announced the launch of a new venture capital fund, Alliance Ventures, that it claims will invest up to $ 1 billion into new technologies over the next five years.

In its first year, the fund expects to invest up to $ 200 million in start-ups and open innovation partnerships with technology entrepreneurs focused on what it calls ‘new mobility’. This includes technologies such as vehicle electrification, autonomous driving, connectivity and artificial intelligence.

The alliance claims its new fund is unique because it offers potential partners access to a big market. Between them, the three partners sold more than 10 million vehicles last year through 10 separate brands and will jointly fund Alliance Ventures, with Renault and Nissan each contributing a 40% share of the fund and Mitsubishi Motors making up the remaining 20%.

Alliance Ventures will be led by Francois Dossa, previously CEO of Nissan’s Brazilian operations and a former investment banker with Société Générale.

First investment announced

Battery specialist Ionic Materials, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, is set to become the first recipient of funding from Alliance Ventures, for its work in developing solid-state cobalt-free battery materials. The equity acquisition by the fund coincides with a joint-development agreement between Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi and Ionic.

Ionic is developing a solid-state electrolyte for creating higher performance more affordable batteries for electric vehicles, consumer electronics and utility grid storage.

Alliance Ventures will run alongside Alliance 2022, a five year strategic plan launched last year, which aims to strengthen cooperation between Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi. By the end of the plan, the Alliance hopes to have launched 12 pure electric vehicles built on common EV platforms and components, as well as bringing to market 40 vehicles with autonomous driving features. On top of that, it plans to develop robo-vehicle ride-hailing services.

“This investment initiative is designed to attract the world’s most promising automotive technology start-ups to the Alliance,” said Carlos Ghosn, chairman and chief executive of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi.

Encryption keys handled outside an HSM are more vulnerable to attack, which can lead to compromise of critical keys. HSMs are a proven and auditable way to secure valuable cryptographic material. Thales nShield Connect secures the generation and storage of the private keys used by the KeyScaler platform within a FIPS 140-2 certified protected environment. This provides the highest level of security and assurance against key compromise and theft.

NXP and Alibaba Cloud Announce Strategic Partnership for Edge Computing and IoT Security

NXP Semiconductors today announced a strategic partnership with Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing and business unit of Alibaba Group.

The two companies are working together to enable development of secure smart devices for edge computing applications and have plans to further develop solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT).

As part of the partnership, AliOS Things, the Alibaba IoT operating system has been integrated onto NXP applications processors, microcontroller chips, and Layerscape multicore processors. Both NXP’s i.MX and Layerscape processors are currently the only embedded systems on the market using the Alibaba Cloud TEE OS platform. The new solution benefits various markets including automotive, smart retail and smart home. And it is currently being applied in applications such as automotive entertainment and infotainment systems, QR code payment scanning applications and smart home speakers.

Companies Commit to a Common Mobile and Fixed 3GPP Compliant Specification for 28 GHz and 39 GHz mmWave Spectrum Bands.

Verizon, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and Novatel Wireless, an Inseego company, today announced plans to collaborate on 5G New Radio (NR) millimeter wave (mmWave) technology development and over-the air field trials based on the 5G NR Release-15 specifications being developed by 3GPP – the global 5G standard.

The companies plan to work together to help move the mobile ecosystem towards faster validation and commercialization of 5G NR mmWave technologies at scale, supporting a full-scale commercial network deployment before the end of the decade.

The companies plan to initially focus on 5G NR operation in 28 GHz and 39 GHz mmWave spectrum bands, showcasing advanced 5G NR technologies to efficiently achieve robust multi-gigabit per second data rates with mobility at significantly lower latencies than today’s networks. These technologies are expected to be critical to meeting the increasing connectivity requirements for emerging consumer mobile and fixed wireless broadband experiences such as streaming high-definition video, immersive virtual/augmented reality, and connected cloud computing. The companies plan on delivering a common 5G NR mmWave technology platform for mobile and home broadband wireless access, supporting a 5G NR migration path for Verizon’s early 5G fixed wireless access deployments and trials based on the 5G-Technology Forum specifications.

The companies expect the collaboration to include over-the-air trials, starting in 2018, that will be compliant with the first 3GPP 5G NR specification that will be part of Release 15. The trials will utilize 5G NR mmWave mobile test platforms from Qualcomm Technologies operating at 28 GHz and 39 GHz to test end-to-end applications in real-world scenarios, across a broad set of 5G NR mmWave use cases and deployment scenarios.

In addition, the trials will employ advanced 5G NR Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna technology with adaptive beamforming and beam tracking techniques to deliver robust broadband communications in real-world mobile or fixed environments, including non-line-of-sight environments and device mobility.

Qualcomm Technologies anticipate utilizing learnings from the trials to help drive the ongoing development of the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X50 5G NR modem family to support anticipated commercial service launches starting the first half of 2019 based on the global 3GPP 5G NR standard.
