See it in action: robots, IoT and AI unite for optimized operations

  • Posted by admin on May 30, 2018

How can you improve quality, prevent downtime, and increase throughput in your manufacturing environment?

The obvious answer. You bring in a robot (meet ARMonk, ARMie for short), the Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI).

In the series of short demo videos below, ARMie will team up with a series of experts to show you examples of how AI can work within your manufacturing environment.  This includes showcasing visual inspection, acoustic inspection, and prescriptive repair.

Let’s rock and robot.

Robots with AI can see defects with visual inspection

Imagine being able to spot defects too small for the human eye or across hundreds of products that all “appear” to look the same? This could be in the form of slight chips in paint or broken tabs.  Take a spin with IBMer John Ward and ARMie (he’s camera shy hiding in the background there) as he showcases these visual inspection capabilities. Do you see what ARMie sees?

Robots with AI can hear equipment and quality issues

ARMie is helping us have a multi-sensory experience with the assistance of IBM Fellow John Cohn. Using AI, sensors on equipment can detect changes in vibration or sound that may indicate a defect. Consider what this means for products or equipment that may be challenging or even dangerous to manually inspect. This could be automobile engines, washing machines or windmills. By placing sensors on the equipment, faulty noises can be detected with no need to dismantle a product or put workers in dangerous situations . Using AI, the acoustic insights solution can compare sound clips against a library of known defects to determine the cause.

AI can predict equipment failures and offer repair guidance

Finally, ARMie helps us showcase IoT Equipment Advisor.  We want to be able to analyze and understand asset health, and be able to help technicians repair things before they go wrong. See how we trick ARMie into thinking something is wrong with him – don’t worry, he’s a good sport – to illuminate the benefits of this capability.
